# Writing an equation from two points on a graph

A complication is that the definition of graph in advanced mathematics is much broader: Find the slope and the y-intercept of the line. This example is written in function notation, but is still linear. As shown above, you can still read off the slope and intercept from this way of writing it.

We can get down to business and answer our question of what are the slope and y-intercept. In this form, the slope is m, which is the number in front of x. In our problem, that would have to be 2. In this form, the y-intercept is b, which is the constant. In our problem, that would be The answer is the slope is 2 and the y-intercept is Note how we do not have a y.

This type of linear equation was shown in Tutorial If you said vertical, you are correct. The graph would look like this: Note that all the x values on this graph are 5. Well you know that having a 0 in the denominator is a big no, no. This means the slope is undefined. As shown above, whenever you have a vertical line your slope is undefined.

Looking at the graph, you can see that this graph never crosses the y-axis, therefore there is no y-intercept either. Another way to look at this is the x value has to be 0 when looking for the y-intercept and in this problem x is always 5.

So, for all our efforts on this problem, we find that the slope is undefined and the y-intercept does not exist.Free Algebra 1 worksheets created with Infinite Algebra 1.

Once your statistical analyses are complete, you will need to summarize the data and results for presentation to your readers. In the last lesson, I showed you how to get the equation of a line given a point and a slope using the formula.

Progressions Documents for the Common Core Math Standards Funded by the Brookhill Foundation Progressions. Draft Front Matter; Draft K–6 Progression on Geometry. Students are asked to write and solve a two-step equation to model the relationship among variables in a given scenario. Purplemath. Straight-line equations, or "linear" equations, graph as straight lines, and have simple variable expressions with no exponents on them. If you see an equation with only x and y – as opposed to, say x 2 or sqrt(y) – then you're dealing with a straight-line equation.. There are different types of "standard" formats for straight lines; the particular "standard" format your book.

Anytime we need to get the equation of a line, we need two things. Learn how to find the equation of the line that goes through the points (-1, 6) and (5, -4).
